WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
BCM reserves the right to cancel classes. Classes
fill up fast, so sign up early! Space reserved when payment is received
in full. Members must cancel at least three days in advance to receive
full refund. Cancel within three days to credit your fee towards
another class, otherwise you will lose your fee. Members who arrive
more than fifteen minutes late will not be able to attend that class
and class fees will be forfeited. Members who miss more than three
classes without proper cancellation will receive a minor violation.
If a class is more than one session, you must attend all sessions
to be certified in that area.
Orientation and Membership are prerequisites for all classes. All Sessions are from 6-9pm unless otherwise noted. Financial Aid is available, please contact us to see if you qualify.
Orientation. Last Tuesdays Monthly. Free.
What is BCM? How to I submit a tape for air? How can I learn to
use BTV equipment? What is public access? Learn the answers to these
questions and more. The orientation is your first step to becoming
a BTV producer. Come with questions, tour the facility, and get
ready to join BCM! ATTENTION NON PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS - call us to schedule a special orientation at your convenience where you can learn the many services available to them through BCM.
Studio Production. Quarterly. 8 sessions. $80.
Make your own TV show in our full-service TV studio. This comprehensive 8-part class will certify you to produce in both our smaller Express Studio and our main studio, Berkeley's hidden treasure. Learn the basics of all aspects of studio production, from camera and lighting to directing and audio. Take turns on crew positions as you produce 3 actual shows. This space is ideal for music bands, screenings and talk shows. You will learn how to best use the two studios, which differ in that the Express Studio is more basic employing one technician whereas the main studio requires a crew of at least six. In this workshop, we'll show you how to be a host, what to wear and do on camera, and how best to use all of your options to make your shows happen! A variety of information will be presented, so look out for specialized clinics in upcoming months focusing on specific crew positions. We will also explain the process of planning a studio production, reservation policies, graphics and character generation, interviewing techniques and more!
Field Production. Quarterly. 4 sessions. $80.
This core class offers hands on training with 3-chip DV cameras, microphones, audio mixers, field monitors, lighting kits and accessories for your field productions. Learn shooting techniques, use of tripods, omni, lavalier (clip-on), and shotgun microphones to produce quality video and audio. We'll also discuss equipment safety and checkout procedures. You'll finish off by doing a short video production! Successful completion of this class will certify you to check out equipment for 2 days up to four times per video project.We have Sony PD150, TRV 900 and PD 100 DV cameras.
Editing. Quarterly. 4 sessions. $80.
This class will introduce you to the world of non-linear, or computer-based, editing. We will show you how digital editing is different from traditional tape-to-tape or linear editing, and familiarize you with some useful concepts and terminology. You will learn different editing styles, and everything you need to know to edit your production in Final Cut Pro. This Macintosh-based program is a fully professional Non Linear Editing system and is widely used in the video industry. You will learn the ins and outs of the platform, from capturing video to exporting your finished product to tape. This class is required to use our edit suite, even if you already use an NLE, as you will need to learn our media management system.
Special Workshops (Offered on a rotating schedule)
BCM is occasionally offers shorter, one night seminars
for members and non-members interested in furthering their production
knowledge. Members will receive a discount on these classes. Call
us for class dates. Prices vary.
ADVANCED FINAL CUT PRO
If you have been struggling with Final Cut Pro edith Projects, this workshop is for you. Come prepared with any questions you have or if you don't have any specific questions, you can learn come adavanced techniques like color correction, broadcast safe filters, audio filters and transitions, and more.
ALL ABOUT LIGHTING
Please sign up as soon as possible. Class may be cancelled for lack of enrollment. Come with questions about lighting situations and get a better understanding of this vital skill required for good production value in your video. Some of the areas covered will be studio and field lighting set-ups, gels and lighting for interviews.
LIGHTING TECHNIQUES
Lighting for video productions can be complex,
but is also a crucial part of any production. In this workshop, you will learn tips and tricks
to help you to improve the lighting conditions on field or studio sets. Concepts
such as gaffing, three-point lighting, gels, gobos and diffusers will be
discussed. Seasoned producers may also come prepared with questions and pick
up solutions for practical difficulties.
DIRECTING IN THE STUDIO
In this workshop, an experienced director
will share knowledge about organizing a smooth production. The responsibilities of a director
will be described in detail and you will play the role of director in a
simulated production. This class will help you balance the many hats that
a director must wear to pull off an impressive studio show.
MOTION GRAPHICS & CG
Learn how to use our new Windows-based Compix
Character Generation system, used in the Large Studio to create great titles, including lower-thirds, scrolling titles for intros and outros as well as transitions such
as wipes and dissolves. We will also show you templates and color schemes
that work. The Scala system may be introduced as well, which is used in the
Xpress studio.
ON CAMERA TRAINING
Calling all studio producers, field camera hosts and interviewees! Attend BCM’s one day workshop “ON CAMERA TRAINING” and learn a host of new skills and practice presenting information in front of the camera! Learn interviewing techniques, hosting methods, working with crew and more. Space is limited, so sign up now!
PORTABLE
STUDIO
With this class comes special equipment borrowing
privileges like switchers, multiple cameras, record decks, etc. Take the studio set-up outside
of BCM! Produce professional shows all at once, without further editing.
You and your crew can take this workshop and get certified to take out this
giant kit called the portable studio. Prerequisite: Studio Production and two successfully produced large studio shows.
BASIC DVD STUDIO PRO
Learn the basics of this Macintosh based DVD authoring program so that you can take your completed Final Cut Pro project into the program. You can then create a basic menu and cablecast your program on DVD!
YOUTH TV CAMP
Berkeley Youth TV Camp will teach you how to create
your own television show from beginning to end.
Shows will be aired on cable TV in Berkeley on
B-TV Channels 28 and 33.
Youth participants will get experience working in every crew position. What
are you interested in? Make a show that you’d like to watch.
By the end of the week-long session, you will be certified in studio production
at BCM and can continue to create your own shows for free!
Participants will also recieve a free membership to BCM and
be eligible to take other classes throughout the year.

MOTION TOOLS IN FINAL CUT PRO
Learn everything about animating stills, text and video, similar to using After Effects. Master the 'Motion' tab in Final Cut Pro and you will be comfortable specifying changes in scale, aspect ratio, opacity, and much more. Also, learn key frames to create the effect you want!
