Recording Bars & Tone on a Pre-blacked tape for Studio Productions

All Pre-blacked tapes sold by BCM include Bars & Tone on the first 30 seconds and black from 30 seconds on.  However, if you want a true reference bars & tone it is recommended that you redo the bars and tone on the first 30 seconds of the tape using an insert edit.  Directions are listed below.

Follow the directions for Recording Bars & Tone to a Pre-Blacked tape for Field & Edit Productions to the letter except for one small but important difference. Replace the Office Bars & Tone tape refered to in step # 1 with the studio reference Bars and Tone that was recorded on your studio master tape at the beginning of your studio shoot.  By using your personal studio reference Bars & Tone instead of the generic Office Bars & Tone as your Bars & Tone source tape you will be able to record a true reference Bars & Tone from your studio shoot onto your edit master.

Push up red master output faders so all green lights and first yellow light (O dB) on sound board light meter are lit

On bottom record VCR turn Norm knobs to O dB (needle between red & black)

Put Pre-Blacked tape in record deck

Record the Bars & Tone to the tape in record deck using a V, A1, A2 insert edit from 8 seconds to 30 seconds

NOTE:  You have to start this edit at 8 seconds because the decks need a 7 second pre-roll before the first in point.  End bars & tone at 30 seconds.  This will give you 22 seconds of bars & tone.

9)  Record the Bars & Tone tape in source deck to the Pre-blacked tape in record deck using

a V, A1, A2 insert edit. You have to set the edit in points at 8 seconds into both tapes

because both decks need a 7 second pre-roll before the in point.  Set the out point on the

record deck at 30 seconds.  This will give you 22 seconds of bars & tone on the Pre-blacked

     tape in record deck.
