Upcoming Workshops

HD Production   2 sessions  $75     2 sessions  January 25th and January 28th Wednesday 6-9pm and Saturday 3-6pm
High definition cameras have arrived at Berkeley Community Media!  This workshop will focus on our new JVC GY-HM100U cameras and will cover everything from how to white balance, focus, expose and record audio to the special considerations of shooting HD.  Field Production is required as a prerequisite.  Taught by Jeff Kimmich. 

Final Cut Pro Version X 3 sessions  $99    3 sessions February 6, 13, 20 and March 5, 12, 19  Mondays from 6-9pm
This class will introduce you to the world of non-linear editing using Apple's Final Cut Pro.   You will learn different editing styles and in the process, acquire the skills needed to edit your own project.  Final Cut Pro is a world famous Mac based application that has become the industry standard for film makers such as the Coen brothers and Walter Murch.  This workshop certifies you to make reservations in our editing lab. Instructor Arielle Elizabeth.

Field Production  4 sessions $80   4 sessions March 7, 10, 14, 17 Wednesdays 6-9pm and Saturday 3-6pm
This core class offers hands on training with 3 chip digital video cameras, microphones, mixers, monitors, and lighting kits for your productions shot on location.  Learn shooting techniques and use of accessories to produce high quality video and audio.  We'll also discuss equipment safety and check out procedures.  Students will be given projects to complete during the class culminating in a final group project.  Successful completion of this class will certify you to check out equipment.  We will be using the Sony PD-150 and PD-170 cameras.  Taught by Jeff Kimmich.

Studio Production  4 sessions $80  4 sessions  January 10, 12, 17, 19 Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9pm
Make your own TV shows or films in our full-service Large Studio, the biggest studio in the East Bay!  Or, choose our simple and easy to use Express Studio which can be operated by just one technician.  This 4-part class will show you the basics of all aspects of studio production, from camera and lighting to audio and graphics.  Take turns on crew positions as you produce actual shows.  Get certified and then it's your turn to create your own shows.  Taught by Jeff Kimmich.

Learn How to Write and Produce a Low-Budget Short Film $75   TBD  Based on the book "The Complete Guide to Writing, Producing, and Directing a Low-Budget Short Film."  Taught by author Gini Graham Scott.  This workshop covers all the steps from developing the script to casting the actors to conducting the shoot, working with an editor, and getting your film seen.  It will help you create a more professionally produced film and avoid the biggest mistakes of new filmmakers.

Lighting Clinic  Dates TBA.  Practice various lighting effects to achieve the desired mood of your production.  Professional theater lighting grid allows subtle switching and change of focus from one subject to another.

Interview Techniques Clinic Dates TBA. Learn the techniques necessary to obtain the best interview possible. Everything from where to position the camera and how to help your subject relax to overall storytelling elements using video.

Berkeley Community Media presents The First Annual
BCM Summer Shorts Movie Jam: 48 Hour Film Festival.

Gather your crew and come to the informational launch party July 28th at 5pm.

The contest begins at 6pm and over the next 48 hours you will create an original 5 minute short film to be shown on the big screen Saturday July 30th at 8pm.
