HEADLINES: 5th Year of Horror Film Festival Huge Success!
Here's what our Interns had to say:
Noelle Dexter writes:
The film festival, the one that had to do with horror was quite a project. We took the whole studio apart bit by bit and transformed it into a spooky palace of haunted dreams. Spider webs and skeletons, and bright psychedelic lights, darkness was all around as we worked endlessly to make sure everyone would be afraid. We gave out flyers to the commoners and strapped the posters all about Berkeley to inform the towns people of our evil plan...(Horror Film Fest). We took to the streets with bright colors of chalk to tell the people where to go. We made gift certificates and collaborated with the cooking place called Looney's to feed the horror goers. We set up the reels, dressed up, had costume contests, took tickets by the doors, collaborated with film makers from all over the Bay Area. An evil German Doctor hosted (with Miss Misery) for the whole event. We made sure that all of the people got in...but no one could get out until INTERMISSION.........OOOH!
Misha Berman had this to say:
The film festival was really great. Great costumes, really awesome music, good food and the movies were great. I had a really good time! The movies were really scary and great for short films. People were so friendly and it was easy to mingle with people so I met a lot of interesting people.
BCM Board Member, Mike Vaughn Reports:
Boo! Damn, that was funny and a bit frightening. Really folks, I had a great time at the festival. The energy was alive with the dead and spooky with the goofy. Not only did I see some of the best costumes I've seen in a few years, I saw some very good short films. I think the evening brought out the best of BCM: Strong films which made for quality broadcast content and smart, kind and dedicated mediamakers. One of the things which makes BCM a unique enity is the very fact that is is driven by member producers. When the people are given access to broadcasting training, means of production and conext delivery then "the people have spoken". Our BCM family came together this October and showed the community just how skilled we are and just how much fun we like to have. Please do keep you membership current, take some classes, make some shows and stay connected to YOUR station. I lookforawrd to your short film at The 48 Hour Summer Shorts Movie Jam! See you around and thanks for your (ACTIVE!) membership.
BCM Board Member, Syaft Iadge:
It was great seeing all the support for the film festival...and the photographers who showed up to help capture the evening. I'd also like to thank everyone for supporting film makers at Berkeley Community Media. Remember the purpose of BCM is to promote free speech and local film makers.
Melanie Mentzel, membership development at BCM
The heart of the community came out to howl and prowl and scream with delight at the awesome special effects employed by local film makers...two of our interns plus two members submitted their films along with other Bay Area film makers!!! The film festival flowed seemlessly with two amazing hosts this year: our very own Dr. Frank-n-Beans and new this year, co-host Miss Misery with our co-producer Jeff Lunzaga of Torrid Productions. With BCM decorated to the hilt with a spooky hall, special photo corner and skeletons on the walls, our guests who dressed for success felt right at home! Among the Zombies and unicorns, Mike Meyers, a Gnome, swan and stripper vampire, were the winners of the costume contest: Rambo Chick who starred in Alajandro Quintana's movie "Little Red," the Maniac Cop who's ears were dripping blood, and Robin of Locksley! Congratulations to ALL for the amazing make-up and costuming effort! This was a special fund raising event by BCM and amazing prizes were donated from local businesses such as Berkeley Iron Works, Berkeley Rep Theatre, Freight and Salvage, Spenger's Fresh Fish Grotto and many more! Delicious food from Looney's Southern BBQ was served to our hungry guests during intermission as well as Peet's Coffee. We are supported by the most amazing community of individuals and businesses! Thanks to everyone who came to witness what it feels like to be part of a grass roots local event. Look for the festival to be broadcast from start to finish on BeTV 28 and on BETV.org
Film maker and Intern Alexa Cuizon had this comment:
The Horror Film Fest was pretty much everything a film festival should be! A night of art, fun, and blood...So much blood. Where starving artists can band together and share their work to the world, and get fed in the process! Where zombies, vampires, and panda bears can be in the same room and not kill each other! Because let's face it...The panda would have won. I Had the honor of showcasing my film "Breakfast" at the festival, along with my fellow co-intern Alejandro Quintana, who directed "Little Red". To see the reactions from my family (My aunt attended wearing my production company's t-shirt!), friends (who all dressed up as zombies in honor of the film. Oh, and one came as a stripper vampire.. for everyone's pleasure), and fresh blood---I mean, strangers, was an absolute delight! I'm not going to lie, it made me a bit teary-eyed and emotional. Because even bad-ass women directors can cry too.
